Argentina's women's team closed the October FIFA window with a result worth more than a draw. Two goals down to Brazil after half an hour, they were level before the hour mark and then held on for a 2-2 draw with ten players for more than half an hour, in front of more than 29,000 fans at Arena Pernambuco, in the Recife metropolitan area. It was the rematch of Brazil's 3-1 win on Saturday in Porto Alegre.

Brazil struck first

Arthur Elias's side scored early: in the 12th minute, Bia Zaneratto headed in a cross from Raíssa Bahia. Brazil could have doubled their lead in the 22nd minute, when Jhonson went one-on-one with Argentina goalkeeper Esponda and fired wide. Soon after came the second: a Priscila shot deflected off the Argentina defence and Gio Garbelini put away the rebound for 2-0.

Bonsegundo in both goals

Argentina's response had one name on it. In the 34th minute, Florencia Bonsegundo set up Daiana Falfán, who finished inside the box for 2-1. Early in the second half, Agostina Holzheier was brought down in the area on a counter and Bonsegundo converted the penalty for 2-2.

Ten players and more than half an hour to go

Twelve minutes into the second half, Sofía Domínguez was shown a straight red card: in a challenge over a throw-in by the touchline she pulled Kerolin's hair, and the referee sent her off. Down to ten, Germán Portanova's team held out for the rest of the match and took an away draw against the 2027 World Cup hosts.

The double-header in numbers

  • Porto Alegre (Saturday 10th): Brazil 3-1 Argentina, with goals from Luany, Geyse and Angelina; Maricel Pereyra pulled one back.
  • Recife (Tuesday 13th): Brazil 2-2 Argentina, with goals from Bia Zaneratto and Gio Garbelini; Daiana Falfán and Florencia Bonsegundo, from the spot, for Argentina.

The context matters: according to Infobae, Brazil have won 18 of the 22 meetings between the two sides. For Brazil, the window ended with one win and one draw.

What's next

Argentina, already booked for the World Cup that Brazil will host from 24 June to 25 July 2027, play again in the November FIFA window: according to Infobae, they will host Germany at Estadio Único in La Plata. Brazil travel to Japan on 29 November in Hiroshima.
